The Cars is the debut studio album by American rock band the Cars, released on June 6, 1978, by Elektra Records.
Produced by Roy Thomas Baker, the album spawned the singles "Just What I Needed", "My Best Friend's Girl", and "Good Times Roll".
It peaked at number 18 on the US Billboard 200 and has been certified six-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
The cover model was Nataliya Medvedeva, a Russian-born model, singer, writer, and journalist.
Unlike many of the Cars' album covers, the cover for The Cars was designed by the record company, rather than drummer Robinson.
Robinson said in an interview that he "had designed a very different album cover [for The Cars] that cost .00 to design."
He continued, "I remember the price exactly. It was completely finished and everything, but it was a little more bizarre than the cover that they had in mind, so they changed some of it because of copyright problems and put it in as the inner sleeve.
But I think that was way more how we envisioned who we were then."
The cover was not well liked by the members of the band, however.
Robinson said, "I thought that when the Elektra came out it was way too slick.
The pictures of us I didn't like."
Guitarist Elliot Easton expressed dislike for "that big grinning face", saying, "Man, I got tired of that cover."
Critically, the album was well received. "The pop songs are wonderful", Rolling Stone critic Kit Rachlis stated in his 1978 review, adding: "Easy and eccentric at the same time, all are potential hits."
In a retrospective review, AllMusic's Greg Prato praised The Cars as "a genuine rock masterpiece" and stated that "all nine tracks are new wave/rock classics", concluding: "With flawless performances, songwriting, and production, the Cars' debut remains one of rock's all-time classics."
In 2000, it was voted number 384 in Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums.
Rolling Stone ranked The Cars at number 282 on its 2003 list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".
The Cars were an American rock band formed in Boston in 1976.
Emerging from the new wave scene in the late 1970s, the line-up consisted of Elliot Easton (lead guitar), Greg Hawkes (keyboards), Ric Ocasek (rhythm guitar), Benjamin Orr (bass guitar), and David Robinson (drums).
Ocasek and Orr split lead vocal duties, and Ocasek served as the band's principal songwriter.
Robert Palmer, music critic for The New York Times and Rolling Stone, described the Cars' musical style: "they have taken some important but disparate contemporary trends—punk minimalism, the labyrinthine synthesizer and guitar textures of art rock, the '50s rockabilly revival and the melodious terseness of power pop—and mixed them into a personal and appealing blend."
The Cars were named Best New Artist in the 1978 Rolling Stone Readers' Poll and won Video of the Year for "You Might Think" at the first MTV Video Music Awards in 1984.
Their debut album The Cars sold six million copies and appeared on the Billboard 200 album chart for 139 weeks.
As of 2001, the Cars had sold over 23 million albums in the United States.
The band disbanded in 1988 and Ocasek stated that a reunion would never happen.
Orr died in 2000 from pancreatic cancer.
In 2005, Easton and Hawkes joined with Todd Rundgren to form the spin-off band the New Cars, which performed classic Cars and Rundgren songs along with new material.
The surviving original members reunited in 2010 to record the album Move Like This, which was released in May 2011, followed by a short tour.
In April 2018, the Cars were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and reunited to perform at the induction ceremony.
The reunion was their final performance with Ocasek, who died on September 15, 2019 of cardiovascular disease.
