Most everyone knows the story of Coca-Cola and the Georgia pharmacist who came up with a French wine nerve tonic with the addition kick of kola nut to help him deal with his chronic morphine addiction, developed after he was treated for Civil War injuries. John Pemberton was so ill that he sold his patent for the concoction for around ,700 to Asa Chandler, an Atlanta businessman, under circumstances that still seem somewhat shady. So much for American entrepreneurship. Chandler turned the odd-tasting soft drink (minus the cocaine) into a top 100 American corporation, the first to become so on the strength of a beverage product other than beer. This sign dates from 1939 to 1941, between Coke’s “The Best Friend Thirst Every Had” and “The Only Thing Like Coca-Cola is Coca-Cola Itself” slogans. We haven’t opened the sealed frame, but it looks like a cardboard or paper sign that was displayed in drug stores, soda fountains or other places were Coke was served on premises. Doesn’t look like a paper magazine ad. The frame may be original or near original, but we can’t tell for certain. Has a fair number of small scratches and dings.
The frame measure 9 x 11 inches (20 x 24 cm). As the picture shows, the frame is nailed and taped shut on the back with a nice wire hanger. Perfect on the wall for that recreated 1940s/1950s soda fountain, general or country store, drugstore, or even a garage or auto repair shop (they sold Coke in machines).
