With a somewhat vague legend and dimensions that would almost go unnoticed by most tourists, the Manneken Pis has become the symbol of Brussels.Created in 1388, the Manneken Pis is one of the most representative and prized symbols of Brussels. The Manneken Pis is a small statue about 50 cm long that represents a cheeky little boy urinating on the top of a fountain. This emblem is found in the old part of the Belgian capital, between L’Etuve and Chêne, next to the Grand-Place.

Given the importance of the statuette, armies tried to steal it several times, until an ex-prisoner captured it. The residents of were so dismayed that in 1619 a copy replaced it until today.Legends around the Manneken PisOver the years, hundreds of legends around the Manneken Pis have emerged. Here are the most common:The boy in the statuette allegedly put out a lit wick in a completely original way, thereby saving the city from being set on fire by a fire.It is said that the cradle of the son of Godefroid the Bearded man was hung from the branch of a young oak tree at the site of the Battle of Ransbeek. During the fight, the child out of his cradle was found urinating on a tree.According to another legend, the son of a Brussels nobleman was absent from a procession to urinate on the wall of a witch's house. The latter, furious, would have cast a spell to transform it into a statue.Manneken Pis clothesIn 1698, a governor offered the first costume of the Manneken Pis, a tunic that was the first piece of the 650 costumes that were offered by the presidents who visited Brussels.
