Zoltan Szilagyi Jews Harp, Intensely Deep Tone. Giant Size, Rare, Not UsedT
his is a fine Jews (Jaw) Harp made by Zolton Szilagyi, in
Kesckemet, Hungary. I always thought that Zolton made the best, most musical Jews Harps in the world. Perhaps not as pretty as some,... they had the fullest, richest and best musical qualities. Zolton was precise in his tuning as well. This giant-size harp is marked in the key of C.
This is one of the biggest harps that Szilagyi made. It measures 112mm tip to tip. I cannot find this harp in Zoltan's catalog or with any of the European re-sellers of his instruments. It is similar to Szilagyi's "Counsel" but slightly different. Very unique is the extra weight that Szilagyi applied to the end of the tongue or reed to make the tone even deeper and slower. (See photos) It requires slow and deliberate playing but such play is very "laid-back" and quite relaxing.
Note: Zoltan told me that, although some players liked the extension of the reed beyond the frame, the tone was determined by the length of the reed AFTER the crimp.
This harp has been stored for about 20 years and only tested, never really played. So, it is in near-new condition. Blued steel frames with German spring-steel tongues.
Zolton told me that the "secret" to his harps was that he used the finest German spring steel for the tongue or reed. He showed me a roll of it and told me that it would make hundreds of Jews Harps but cost over 00. The other "secret" was Zolton's crimp... of the reed to the frame. He had developed a press that did this perfectly and consistently every time. He told me NOT to take a photograph of it when I visited.
Zolton was a man of great imagination and he had scores of different models of Jews Harps as his mood demanded. They often had fanciful names that Zoltan had heard and liked. This one defies complete identification.
Few Jews harps were so long and had this much weight added to the reed. Often Zolton would add just a spot of solder but this harp has been built up for a low tone, considerably. Although a beginner can produce a nice sound, some expertise might be required to use it musically
I use a macro-lens and try to post very clear, magnified pictures so that buyers can see, for themselves, what I'm describing.
I am posting a short audio clip of this actual instrument's sound. You'll have to copy and paste the link. Excuse my playing.
